Matsuzaki Kan
松崎幹
Kan Matsuzaki (b. 1977) is a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist based in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. He moved to the United States in 2000, where he graduated from the New England School of Photography in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon returning to Japan, he began pursuing ceramics with serious dedication in 2013, while continuing his career as a photographer.
Influenced by his father, the celebrated potter Ken Matsuzaki, and his uncle, the renowned lacquer artist Tohru Matsuzaki, Kan brings a distinctive and contemporary perspective to traditional Mino-style pottery. His unconventional artistic background informs his approach, which combines meticulous hand-forming and carving techniques, allowing him to shape each piece with purpose and precision.
Focusing on Mino-ware, particularly Shino and Oribe styles, Kan’s work is renowned for its intricate glaze applications and richly textured surfaces, reflecting his photographer’s eye for composition and detail. By using red firewood in his kilns, he achieves a high iron content in the ash, which enhances the depth and richness of his glazes.
Kan’s work embodies a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation, showcasing his artistic journey from photography to ceramics.
